Spring Workshops
March 16-17, 2024 – Jolie Elder
Jolie Elder has explored a wide range of needle arts after learning to cross stitch at age four. She designs, teaches, spins, and stunt knits in the Atlanta area where she demystifies the obscure. In October 2023 Jolie taught at the NY State Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck. This prestigious annual festival draws approximately 30,000 fiber-arts enthusiasts and over 300 vendors.
Jolie has served on the boards of Atlanta Knitting Guild, North Georgia Knitting Guild, Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance, and Center for Knit and Crochet. She has published in PLY, Spin-Off, and Cast On. Her cleverest invention, Versa Lace, is a method for working stockinette-based laces reversibly. 2023 – Lily Chin
Lily Chin is an internationally famous knitter and crocheter who has worked in the yarn industry for more than 30 years as a designer, instructor, and author of 8 books on knitting and crochet What hasn’t Lily done? She was named to the Crochet Hall of Fame in 2015, named a Master Knitter by Vogue Knitting, and has been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry since age 13. A New York City native, Lily has lived part-time in Los Angeles as well. She’s designed for magazines and yarn companies since 1982. She’s worked for designers from Ralph Lauren to Diane von Furstenberg, from Isaac Mizrahi to Vera Wang. Her work has been on the backs of supermodels and celebrities.

2021 – Kate Atherley
Kate is Knitty.com’s Managing Technical Editor, and a seasoned designer and teacher of all things knitterly. She’s known for her attention to detail in her patterns and her classes, and she regularly teaches at stores and events across North America, including Interweave YarnFest and Vogue Knitting Live. Her work has appeared in many books and magazines.
Her latest book, The Knitter’s Dictionary, is an easy-to-use and friendly guide to the language of knitting. Other books by Kate include ‘Knit Mitts: Your Hand-y Guide to Knitting Mittens and Gloves’, released in fall 2017; ‘Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet’ was released summer 2015; and Her ‘Pattern Writing for Knit Designers’.

2019 – Margaret Radcliffe
Author of the the bestselling Knitting Answer Book (Storey Publishing, 2005) and The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques (2008) and Circular Knitting Workshop, was published in March 2012. Margaret’s 4th book, The Knowledgeable Knitter, was released in September 2014.
Margaret Radcliffe’s books explore knitting techniques in a depth well beyond what’s usually presented and do so in a way that makes both the techniques and their appropriate uses clear to knitters. As a designer, she focuses on garments that look complicated but rely on the simplest knitting techniques. As a publisher, she emphasizes patterns that help knitters learn new techniques and improve their skills.

2018 – Romi Hill
Knitter and crafter from a very early age, renowned knitwear designer Rosemary (Romi) Hill’s work has appeared in numerous publications and self-published patterns and books Specializing in lace, Romi’s accessible teaching style, patience and positive approach make her classes popular wherever she teaches. A true believer that knitting should be enjoyable, Romi works with her students to find their own sweet spot: that perfect knitting experience that turns a special pattern and yarn into an amazing product.

2017 – Patty Lyons
Patty Lyons is a nationally recognized knitting teacher and technique expert who is known for teaching the “why” not just the “how” in her pursuit of training the “mindful knitter”. She specializes in sweater design and sharing her love of the much-maligned subjects of gauge and blocking.

2016 – Nancy Bush
Nancy is a renowned expert on Estonian knitting traditions, especially Haapsalu lace. In addition to her research, she has authored the books Folk Socks, Knitting Vintage Socks, Knitting on the Road, Folk Knitting in Estonia, and Knitted Lace of Estonia. Her work has also appeared in Interweave Knits, Piecework, Knitting.

2014 – Joan McGowan Michael
An industry veteran in clothing and knitwear design, Joan McGowan Michael of White Lies Designs specializes in unique, vintage-inspired romantic knits that flatter a wide range of sizes, with an eye to pretty detailing and fit. Joan has previously taught at such venues as Vogue Knitting Live and Interweave Knit Lab.

2013 – Shirley Paden
An internationally recognized hand knitwear designer, Shirley Paden’s designs and articles have appeared in the leading magazines in the hand knitting industry as well as in the collections of leading yarn companies. Her book, Knitwear Design Workshop, was the best selling knitting book on Amazon.com in 2010 and remains a key industry reference. She is also the owner of Shirley Paden Custom Knits located in New York City where Shirley designs an exclusive line of custom knit clothing.

2012 – Melissa Leapman
A widely-published designer, Melissa Leapman has published patterns in every premier needle crafts publication in the country. Melissa is the author of several bestselling knitting and crocheting books, including Cables Untangled, Color Knitting the Easy Way, Mastering Color Knitting, and Stashbuster Knits. As a freelance designer, she has worked with leading ready-to-wear manufacturers and design houses in New York city. In addition, most American yarn companies commission Melissa to create designs to promote their new and existing yarns each season.

2011 – Lorna Miser
Founded Lorna’s Laces in the 1980’s, and went on to write four books, including The Knitter’s Guide to Hand-dyed and Variegated Yarn. Lorna’s designs can be found in many magazines, on web sites and through dozens of yarn companies.

2010 – Anne Carroll Gilmour
Anne has been layering and combining unusual and unexpected combinations of color, pattern, texture, technique & fiber since I was a small child. A gifted teacher and original designer, Anne has published articles and patterns in most major American fiber arts periodicals.
